Jim,
For the grand prize for the last one on the island how about an all expense paid cruise on the Nina,Pinta Or Santa Maria to the Houston Ship Channel? I really do have an idea for the Columbus Fleet- we can sell them to well heeled Texans such as Ross Perot and instead of building a mausoleum they can have a Viking Funeral.

If there was ever a reason to get anyone off the island, much more the City Council, it would be the do nothing "tax and spend" leftovers from the Rhodes years, the most useless of whom is B.J. Longoria. My reasons are still the same as week 1 with her continued high level of incopentence and unaccountability which Lago used to harp on about concerning the City Council. Of course, due to the name recognition plague in this city and the free advertising she got from the Lago show, she still got re-elected. Thank God she's not running again.

The interesting thing about observing this site is that in almost every message contains an element of desperation and the only solution we continue to turn to is for some government big brother to come bail us out by taxing us more. Would not it be interesting to see what would happen if the government would leave citizens alone. Is not government our servant? Can not the average citizen think for himself? Is not the citizen capable of making the best decision for himself and in his own best interest? The council thinks not.....

Sorry Mayor. A vote from your loyal constituent. Since we are talking about "loyal" let's talk about the "loyal opposition". It seems to me that a good number of these people are the ones who pay the least taxes, such as the senior citizen members of the Taxpayers Association. Granted, seniors deserve some relief, but by opposing every bond issue they are shifting their tax burden on people like myself, fifty year olds who are still working. If they want to maintain their tax status they need to support projects that will promote economic growth and an expansion of the tax base. Otherwise, eventually they will have to assist in picking up the slack even if it means cuts in their tax exemptions. Nobody likes additional taxes but we need to move forward. If there is a problem with how and when the money is spent then put people in office who will oversee the proper spending, but to isolate ourselves from the economic boom that the rest of state is experiencing is a crime in itself. Anyway, sorry Mayor, but it's just a game.

I would like to make a suggestion that will improve economic development here as much as Packery Channel, and is cheap. Start using the hotel motel money to promote local tourism the way the Texas law describes. Our city council treats hotel motel money like it is some free lance grab bag of goodies. If we actually promoted this city to visitors and conventions, we wouldn't need a TIF zone.

The problem according to today's Caller Times is that tourists raise Ozone. This is a quote from Gretchen Arnold.

"One theory, she said, is that the ozone is also being blown in from Houston. The winds on Saturday would lend some support to that theory, she said. But the increased traffic from many local events, such as Shrimporee in Aransas Pass, didn't help either. "There was an awful lot of automobile traffic happening in this area," Arnold said. "That could have also contributed to part of that."

Mayor Neal demands honesty. Maybe he should ante up himself. If tourism is going to splatter EPA clean air compliance, then let's run them all out. Isn't that what the port and channel industries want?

Mr. Kopecky-I did not mean to insult you personally. My point was that the Taxpayers Assoc. do not seem to be able to exert the same amount of influence that their very vocal mouths would have us believe they possess. I have had occasion to meet you and thought you were a nice guy. I listened when you ran for Mayor and thought your idea of a strong mayor form of government had merit. I just think that if you (read "you" as anyone out there) can't come up with a better plan then don't knock others who are really trying to get this city going. As I stated in the last post, I would like to hear someone from the Taxpayers Assoc. give us such a plan. The council has done their part by clearly outlining what they want to do with this bond/sales tax package, what have the Taxpayers Assoc. done?

Packery Channel- When I voted against it the first time I didn't like the way it was going to be funded but I liked the idea of the project. Now that I have learned about what a TIF is and how it works I am all for it. Just because something fails in an election doesn't necessarily mean the voters don't like the project or issue. It could mean that they just don't like the way it is going to be funded or the way it was structured.

We once had a ordinance up before Council that pertained to my line of work. When I spoke to BJL about it she said "I don't know much about it. I am just going to follow staff's recommendations." No lie.

Since this seems to have also become a forum for discourse on current events please allow me to add my $.02.

To all of you who are bashing the bond election...what do you propose in it's place? Give me a specific plan that will help promote growth in the city, not just words like "Use what we've got."

To those who continue saying you are overtaxed, take a look at the taxes from other cities. To be fair you have to add the city and county taxes because some cities provide a service that in other areas the county provides and vice versa. When you look at the tax rate as a whole (city, county, school...) we are right about average. When you look at the sales tax most other cities are already at 8.25%, we are just now proposing some proactive ideas that will put us at 8.25%.

To those who bash the Mayor and Council...Why don't you run for office? If the taxpayers are so strong and so big why can't they even elect one of their own to office (Kopecke for Mayor?). They can't even vote out a member of council. I have alot of respect for those who volunteer to serve and have the strength of character to sit there every week while the same old people line up to tell them how much they stink. The way the Mayor politely thanks them after their remarks shows true character. Thank you Mr. O'Brien. Thank you Mr. Perez. Thank you Mr. Hasker. Thank you Mr. Marroquin. Rainmaker apparently isn't Berney Seale. Too many correctly spelled words, and at least a 7th grade vocabulary.

So far I think Rainmaker wants the people to cough up their money in taxes, but doesn't seem to like the people. They condemn anonymity, and yet choose to remain anonymous.

They evidently didn't hear the mayor's bout with Darth Vader AKA Joe O'Brien on KEYS or they would understand it is probably time for a new shakedown strategy. The "we do not like you at all, but we want your money" needs a tune up.

They seem to like hurricanes and use the word Proactive a lot. They are somewhat interested in butt size, and bloated government appeals to them.

They voted BJ Longoria off the island because the mayor has failed to raise taxes.

Mayor Loyd Neal is an EXCEPTIONAL leader and a PROACTIVE city representative, despite the ignorant opposition of many people that are actually FROM Corpus Christi. He's tried again and again to pass tax initiatives that would help the city grow into a thriving, bustling destination, just like the ones YOU go to, when you go on vacation. Just like the cities to which newly-degreed professionals, who graduate here, relocate as quickly as possible.

If Mayor Neal didn't show his disappointment in the lack of substance from the opposition he receives, he wouldn't be human. He is human before he is mayor. ALL OF YOU WHO BASH HIM FOR HIS DISAGREEMENT WITH YOUR OPINION ARE GUILTY OF DOING THE SAME THING! ONLY YOU EXPRESS YOUR DISDAIN WITH ANONYMITY! NOT PROACTIVE EFFORT.

You complain when they do nothing and you complain when they do something. You compalin when they are "yes men" and you compalin when they are proactive.

I can't wait until a hurricane comes along and washes all of YOU to a deserted island. Let's see how well YOU would run a community against its own lack of interest in the investment of a future well-being. I can just see it now: "Let's all get together and scout the island for food supplies!"

"No, I'd rather sit here until my butt gets even bigger, without having to invest any time or effort for my future security. And quite frankly, you've got some nerve asking me to do so. But let me know what YOU GUYS come up with, so I can still exist."

a while later....

"You guys FINALLY decided to get back! I was starting to get hungry! What???! What do you mean I have to pay a tax for my portion of the abundance! I TOLD YOU I DIDN'T SUPPORT THIS. THAT MEANS I DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR IT, BUT I STILL GET TO ENJOY IT!"

Hurricane......soon........please.

Now is the time to take a realistic look at the remaining tribal council members. It appears as if we are moving down the list and John Longoria will be the next member banished.

My observations are as follows:

1. Henry Garrett - During council meetings he can be compared to a bump on a log. He might have been an effective police chief but he doesn,t have a clue about city politics or how to manage a city.

2. Mark Scott - Except for his good looks and boyish charm, this man has nothing to offer. The majority of the time he appears as confused as a deer in the headlights. He offers no original ideas but indication is he will grab hold of and hang on to the coat tails of the BIG BOYS.

3. Betty Jean Longoria - We are all aware that she will not run again. She has not been a competent nor effective representative of the Northwest area.

4. Mayor Loyd Neal - Between his Viewpoint article and the debate with Joe O,Brian he is in dire need of a public relation firm. Perhaps C.P.L. will retain one for him. He might listen but it is apparent he does NOT hear what the citizens of CC are saying.

5. Rex Kinison - I predict he will be the lone survivor. The man is intelligent, has the courage to stand up to the City Manager, and has the foresight to understand the City has to be financially responsible. He reflects intelligence, courage, and the willingness to listen and work for the people of Corpus Christi.

It is time our elected officials realize the days of the "GOOD OLD BOYS" are a thing of the past. As taxpayers, we have the ability to elect representatives to move Corpus Christi into the 21st century.

How about a little civility on this site. Now that we got it, use it for a constructive purpose. These are real problems and real people. Getting on an elected person for not doing his job or arguing about his ideas is great. Attacking people in a mean way is unconstructive. Free speech is a right and a responsibility. This is a great place to argue ideas and tell the world what you think about politicians. We should hold them accountable. I know it sounds if I do not appreciate Corpus Christi but, I love the area, the people, and I want to continue to make living our community. CITY IS BANKRUPT BUT HE WANTS TO FLOAT A NEW BOND ISSUE. FISCALLY IRRESPONSIBLE.
EXPECT YOUR ELECTRIC BILL TO CONTINUE TO INCREASE 20% PER YEAR AS LONG AS HE IS MAYOR.

Garrett is a wolf in sheeps clothing. Don't be fooled. He fooled the majority of the people while he was police chief, but this is a man that cost taxpayers a huge sum of money due to his idiotic decisions at the police department.

she tries to reflect the views of her district, but often times she gets all confused, and therefore gets the community confused.

Johm Longoria is a total sell out.
He has never and will never represent
the people who blindly vote for him.
If he has any shred of decency left,
he would resign and let someone
else who actually cares about the
people of Molina, represent the district.

John go to @#$%%$@#!

She was a major part of the tax and spend council and still has that mentality. She is all talk and no real action. She has failed to represent her constituents and has often sold the Northwest CC sside of town out in favor for more improvements to southside because Rhodes wanted her to. She also failed to keep tabs on what was happening to the Leopard St. improvements and lied to me and others in saying that the improvements were underway in 1997 and would be finished by 2000. Of corse we all saw that Oscar wanna-be performance in early 1999 when she found out there was no money left from the bond to do the improvements. I had asked her Sept. 1998 as to where were the improvements
she had promised would happen and she gave me a song and dance about how it was in planning with engineering. She is an example of the incopentence of the so-called 'leadership' of CC. If the Northwest CC area had its own representation (like Flour Bluff does) she wouldn't have been re-elected in '98. Lago talks about lack of responsibility in city government...she's a prime example...but because of Paul doesn't have the guts to say so. Oh, she's afraid to accept my phone calls also.
